Reading response

Here is a reading response that I have been working on in English.

Title of the text -Whangārei's lawn mowing Good Samaritan found

Author -  Jodi Bryant reporter for the Northern advocate

Summary of the text (4-6 sentences)

A young man named Nikau came across an elderly lady mowing her lawns  and decided to help her out because it was a very hot day. Nikau started his birthday sticking a staple through his finger and had to stay in the hospital all day but what he did not expect was to find himself on the news. Seven sharp interviewed the lady who Nikau helped out and she started going on about what a generous and helpful man Nikau was. Being in the hospital all day and seeing that video really brightened Nikau up. When people asked him what would you do if you saw her mowing the lawn again he didn't hesitate to say “id mow them again”.

The key idea in the text - SEXY paragraph

I believe that the moral of the story is to be kind to all and don't hesitate to help out one another especially your elders. By this I mean if you see elderly people go give them a hand, kindness is free don't hesitate to give it out. For example Nikau said “ My head was saying to go but my heart was saying to help her out”. Nikau wasn't just being kind but he also refused when she said she didn't need any help he insisted. In my own life I will help out without being asked.

What can we learn from the text?

We can learn that if you see someone indeed just help them out even if they don't ask. Don't just stand there and watch people, especially your elders be thoughtful and helpful.

Social studies

This term in social studies I have been learning about Kiwi culture. I've learnt things about famous kiwi icons such as red bands and Tip Top, I've explored my identity learning about my whakapapa. I increased my understanding of the concepts of Kiwi culture for example what things we are recognised for, what are we famous for as a country a culture and people. The Easy part was learning about my own culture but the hard part was learning about different cultures and understanding their tikanga. This topic made me appreciate my culture more because some other indigenous cultures are ignored and are slowly dieing where as Maori culture is slowly revising.
