Angelman Syndrome

Our kaupapa in science is genetics, and for the past day I have been working on a presentation about the genetic disease Angelman Syndrome. Angelman syndrome  is a genetic disorder causing developmental disabilities and nerve-related symptoms. Before this topic I knew nothing about this disability but now I'm coming out with some knowledge about a rare genetic disease.  The hard part was to understand the big scientific words and the easy part was to find the information, pictures and sites about Angelman syndrome.

Toku pakihi

Send it Challenge

Our topic in science is forces and motions. One of our challenges is called the send it challenge where we had a bunch of equipment and had to make a gadget that would send a ping pong ball into the air making it fly it across the classroom. We had heaps of drafts that didn't work out but overall it was a pretty fun challenge that was a bit frustrating at times but the learning behind it meant well and a bonus we also came first equal.

Leadership and Government

For the past term I have been developing a deeper understanding about the topic Leadership and Government.

What and where is leadership?

Leadership is all around us. For example, we have a body of leadership within our school. Someone who shows leadership is people who think of others first and people who are humble. What is democracy? Before this topic I knew nothing about this word. I learnt that it is a rule by people meaning that there is a system where people have free will to choose who they want in government through voting every three years.  My understanding of government is there's a large group of people who negotiate on how to make our communities better. Each of these concepts relate because it is the name of our topic and democracy is an add on that comes under government. This kaupapa links to leadership within our school because in some ways our body of leadership is like a government finding ways to make our school better. This topic was challenging because I knew absolutely nothing about leadership, government and democracy. This topic really made me think.  I believe this topic was important to learn because it grew our understanding of this important kaupapa.

My research project

My issue for the research project was having signs on the bike track and through town directing where the bikers are looking to go. I think this will resolve confusion and bikers won't need to ask where to go.

Charcoal water purifying

In science I am starting the science fair projects. The topic I chose is purifying water with charcoal. I have to identify the topic I chose and investigate how it is useful. Water filters use a special type of charcoal known as activated charcoal' to purify water. The activated charcoal is able to remove the food colouring from the water. The food colouring molecules bind with the charcoal and come out of the water solution.  My hypothesis is   I think that charcoal can purify and remove molecules from water. I don't think that charcoal has a direct  impact on the health of our body but I do believe it can purify water and that's what I’ll be testing.

Leadership within our school

Kia ora in social studies I have been looking into the leaders in our school and what they do. I had to create a diagram of the system of leadership within our school  including the titles of positions. I learnt that there are important roles in and out of our school, for example we have prefects and a principal in our school and out of our school we have the Ministry of education. This topic is similar to the NZ leader report that I done because they both talk about what a good leader is but they differ in the aspects such as leaders in our school make differences within in our kura where as NZ leaders made a big impact on our country but who's to say we can't do that either. Leadership is just a word until you put a meaning to it and I learnt that the leaders in and out of our school do that. Overall I learnt a lot about what leaders are and I am grateful for the things they do big or little.
