About me

 Kia ora my name is Tamarah and I attend Bay of island college. I am a year 9 student in the whare Totara.  I'm good at various types of sports but also at practical things too. I enjoy cooking and kapa haka. My goal for this year is to finish school and get alright grades. What i'm looking forward to this year is  reaching the end of the year and looking  back at the achievements I have made in school and out of school.

                         

Leaving a legacy

I had to explain how people leave a legacy behind them and also how I would. I dont really know what legacy I'm leaving but I'm willing to find out. This year I stood as kaitataki for my school so that might leave a legacy but I dont really know anything else. Anyone can leave a legacy.
We all want to leave our mark on this world to know that our life mattered. What does it mean to leave a legacy? It means putting a stamp on the future.

Who's left a legacy

I had to write to someone who I thought had left a legacy. I explained how Ta Himi Henare has left a legacy and how he has made an impact on me. He left a legacy that everyone would remember.

Waka haerenga

Today our school got the opportunity to partake in a education about waka and voyaging.

We learnt about Sir Hekenukumai Busby he is a tohunga who made over 20 waka, we were privileged to stand on his 2nd boat he made for his wife which is called Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti. The first waka he made was to prove to pakeha that us maori who found Aotearoa wasn't a fluke. So he made his first waka called Te Aurere he made this waka and sailed to rarotonga and other islands and back by only using stars to prove that we didn't find Aotearoa by a fluke.

We also learnt about hoe (oar) we learnt several different commands but man there hundreds more. It was very fun but you had be very disciplined.

It was a fun experience and i would like to learn and do more things around this kaupapa.

Boat Reflection

This morning we tested one of our waka in our school pool. We filled the two bottles with water and predicted will it float or will it sink three people thought it would float and the rest of class thought that it would sink. It sunk because the bottles were filled with water which meant it  wasn't buoyant.

Taumarere

Our class billingual unit travelled to Taumarere to learn about is history we caught a train down. When we got there we went into this tiny room and a lady explained to us the history of the pictures the had on the wall. After that we went for a long walk and during that walk we had a scavenger hunt.

Taumarere is the prominent awa of Ngati Hine.The sacred awa Taumarere  was a main highway of our Tupuna and hence an important initiative for the progeny of Hineamaru. Taumarere When Kawiti reached maturity, he was admitted into Te Whare Wananga mo nga Tohunga, at Taumarere, one of the ancestral villages of Ngati Hine. 

Urupukuapuka

Kia ora tatou, on Friday our class and room 2 went to Urupukapuka island to learn lots of facts.
The point of heading over was to help bring back the song of  birds, their homes and a safe healthy environment for them to stay in. It was a one day trip. We built traps and planted native trees because we needed to make more traps to catch pest and plant trees for future bird habitats. In eager to wanting to help the Ipipiri islands it is a hard process but possible to accomplish with more help and people to support. The translocation of the birds help repopulate the birds so there is more. There are 80%  endemic birds in New Zealand.

Awa history

We have been learning about our awa about the importance of it the history and the impact of our awa this week i have done a KWL.

Ko To Tatou

The last weeks we have been learning about where is our river. I mainly used the source of google maps to find my river I didn't end up finding because it classes as private property on google maps. I have been learning the facts of my river Ngapipito and have found facts I never knew before. Ngapipito road starts from the end of Otiria rd to Mangakahia rd.

weekly review

This week we have been doing allot of things in class like maths,countrywiana and many more.
It was easy this week to complete my work because I was on task 99% of the time.

Countrywiana:  Countrywiana this week is the next thing we are doing instead of Kiwiana and Schoolwiana we have to chose a country and find the things that make that country special.

Maths: This week in maths I have been working up a level in maths learning how to do conversions it has been quite a challenge but I am willing to accept it.

Reading: In reading my group and I are working on activating prior knowledge it was very easy because you need to use similarities.

Interesting fact!

The past few weeks we have been learning how to catch tuna. When you catch the tuna they make it hard to hold them as they have slime over there body so that's why you catch them with nets,spears and hinaki. When you gut it first you have to insert into hot water as it is easier to clean of the slime or you can use a news paper to run it down the eel.

This week we had a Noho Marae and we went up to Ruapekapeka to learn about it's history
it was a really good experience and also it was fun playing around the trenches
